Commentary
The darkness of the night is likened to a covering garment. And sleep is death. The one who is asleep is the dead, because he is cut off from life. This is like His saying, 'And He is the One who takes your souls by night.' If you say: Why did he not explain it as rest? I say: The resurrection in its contrast rejects it, like the rejection of the thirsty camels of water while they are parched. This verse, with its indication of the Creator's power, also shows His blessing upon His creation. For the concealment by the covering of night has many religious and worldly benefits for many people. Sleep and wakefulness, and their comparison to death and life, are indeed a lesson for those who reflect. And it is reported that Luqman said to his son: O my son, just as you sleep and are awakened, so too you will die and be resurrected.
