Commentary
Whoever is in obedience to his desires in his religion follows them in all that he does and leaves, does not seek guidance nor listens to evidence. He is a worshipper of his desires and makes them his god. He says to his messenger, this one who sees no deity except his desires, how can you call him to guidance? Do you rely on him and compel him to Islam and say, 'You must submit whether you like it or not' - and there is no compulsion in religion? This is like His saying, 'And you are not a tyrant over them,' you are not a controller over them. It is narrated that one of them used to worship a stone, and if he saw a better one, he would throw it away and take another. Among them was Al-Harith ibn Qays Al-Sahmi.
