He meant by the village "Sodom," one of the villages of the people of Lot. There were five: Allah, the Most High, destroyed four of them with their inhabitants, and one remained. The rain of evil refers to the stones, meaning that the Quraysh passed many times in their trade to the Levant by that village which was destroyed by stones from the sky. Did they not, during their repeated passing, look at the traces of Allah's punishment and His vengeance and remember? Rather, they were a people who disbelieved in resurrection and did not expect revival and consequence. Thus, hope was placed in the position of expectation, for one only expects the consequence who believes. Therefore, they did not look nor remember, and they passed by it as their riders passed. Or do they not hope for revival as the believers hope for the reward of their deeds? Or do they not fear, according to the Himyarite dialect?
