If the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, needs your gathering around him for a matter and calls you, do not disperse from him except with his permission. Do not compare his calling you to the calling of one another and your leaving the gathering without the caller's permission.

Do not make his naming and calling among you like how you call one another, using the name that his parents named him. Do not say: O Muhammad, but rather: O Prophet of Allah, and O Messenger of Allah, with respect, reverence, a lowered voice, and humility. It is also possible that you do not make the calling of the Messenger to his Lord like how your small ones call your great ones, or your poor call your rich ones, asking for a need. For perhaps he may respond to them, or perhaps he may reject them. The supplications of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, are heard and answered. They slip away little by little. The similar term to 'slip away' is 'gradually enter' and 'to seek refuge.'

Seeking refuge means that this one seeks refuge with that one and that one with this one, meaning they slip away from the group in secrecy, seeking refuge with one another. And 'seeking refuge' is a state, meaning: those seeking refuge. It is said that some of them would seek refuge with a man when he sought permission, and he would grant him permission, and then the one who was not granted permission would go with him. And it was recited: 'if' with a fatha. It is said: he opposed him to the matter, if he went to it without him. From it is His saying, 'And I do not intend to oppose you to what I have forbidden you.' To oppose him in the matter means to push him away without him.

And the meaning of 'those who oppose his command' are those who push away from his command without the believers, and they are the hypocrites. The object has been omitted because the aim is to mention the opposer and the one opposed. The pronoun in 'his command' refers to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, or to the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him. The meaning is: disobedience to him and his religion is a trial in this world or they will be afflicted with a painful punishment in the Hereafter. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, it is a trial of killing. And from Ata, it is earthquakes and terrors. And from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, it is that a tyrannical ruler is made to dominate them.
