Commentary
What is meant by the evil words is that they are said or attributed to the evil ones among men and women. The evil ones among them expose themselves to the evil words. Likewise, the good words and the good ones. And those refers to the good ones, and they are free from what the evil ones say of evil words. Mahmoud said: The verse can bear two meanings. One is that the intended meaning is the evil words for the evil ones, and the reference is to slander and those who indulge in it, and the opposite applies to the good words and the good ones. The second is that the evil ones refer to women and the evil ones refer to men. Ahmad said: If the matter is according to the second interpretation, then this verse details what was summarized in His saying, 'The adulteress shall not be married except by an adulterer.' We have explained that it includes these four categories explicitly and implicitly, so this verse came stating all of them. It also includes another benefit, which is the testimony to the innocence of the Mother of the Believers, as she is the wife of the best of the good ones, so she must be pure and good, free from what she was accused of. This second interpretation is the apparent one, as after the verse is, 'For them is forgiveness and a noble provision,' and with this, He promised his wives, peace be upon him, in His saying, 'We will give her her reward twice and have prepared for her a noble provision.' And Allah knows best. This is a saying that serves as a proverb for Aisha regarding what she was accused of, which does not match her state of purity and goodness. It may also be that those refers to the People of the House, and they are free from what the people of slander say. And what is meant by the evil and good ones are the women, meaning the evil ones marry the evil ones, and the good ones marry the good ones, and likewise the People of the Good. Mentioning the noble provision here is similar to His saying, 'And We have prepared for her a noble provision.' And Aisha said: 'I have been given nine things that no woman has been given.' His words returned. He said: And it was narrated from Aisha that she said: 'I have been given nine things that no woman has been given,' and she mentioned among them that she was created pure among the pure. Ahmad said: This also confirms what I mentioned that the intended meaning of the good ones is the women and men, and that the purpose is to show Aisha's innocence as she is the wife of the best of the good ones, thus she must be good, fulfilling His saying, 'And the good ones are for the good ones.' And Allah knows best. Gabriel, peace be upon him, descended with my image in his palm when the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was commanded to marry me. And I was married as a virgin, and no one else was married as a virgin besides me. And he passed away while his head was in my lap, and he was buried in my house, and the angels surrounded him in my house. And indeed, revelation would descend upon him in his family, and they would disperse from him, and it would descend upon him while I was with him in his blanket. And I am the daughter of his caliph and his friend. And indeed, my innocence was revealed from the heavens, and I was created pure among the pure, and I was promised forgiveness and a noble provision.
