Commentary
It is Medinan, and it has sixty-two verses. It is said: sixty-four [revealed after Al-Hashr]. 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'
A surah is the news of a deleted subject. And 'We revealed it' is an attribute. Or it is a subject described, and the news is deleted, meaning: in what We revealed to you, a surah We revealed. And it is read in the accusative as: 'I struck Zayd,' and there is no place for 'We revealed it,' because it explains the implied subject, so it is in its ruling. Or as: 'Here is a surah' or 'Recite a surah.' And 'We revealed it':
is an attribute. And the meaning of 'We made it obligatory' is that We established the rulings contained in it. The root of obligation is cutting, meaning: We made it an obligation that is firmly established, and the emphasis is for the purpose of intensifying the obligation and confirming it. Or because it contains various obligations, and you say: 'I made the obligation,' and 'I established the obligations.' Or for the multitude of those obligated from the predecessors and those after them. 'You will remember' with the emphasis on the dhāl and its lightening, both are raised as a beginning, and the news is deleted according to Al-Khalil and Sibawayh, meaning: in what is made obligatory upon you.
