Commentary
Al-Hamz: the prodding. And al-Hamazat: the plural of the instance of it. And from it: the spur of the rider. The meaning is that the devils urge people towards sins and entice them to it, just as the prodding urges the animals to walk. And similar to the prodding is the urging in His saying, 'They urge them with a strong urging.' It is a command to seek refuge from their proddings with the words of one who is beseeching his Lord, repeating his call, and to seek refuge from them approaching him at all and hovering around him. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: At the recitation of the Qur'an. And from Ikrimah: At the time of the soul's extraction.
