What and the noon: They are both confirmations. That is, if it is necessary for You to show me what You promise them of punishment in this world or in the Hereafter, then do not make me a companion to them and do not punish me with their punishment. From Al-Hasan: Allah informed him that there is a punishment for his nation, but He did not inform him whether it is in his lifetime or after his death, so He commanded him to invoke with this supplication. If you say: How can it be permissible for Allah to make His infallible Prophet among the wrongdoers, so that he asks not to be made with them? I say: It is permissible for a servant to ask his Lord for what he knows He will do, and to seek refuge with Him from what he knows He will not do, as a manifestation of servitude and humility before his Lord, and in submission to Him. And his seeking forgiveness, blessings and peace be upon him, when he would rise from his gathering seventy times or a hundred times for that reason. How beautiful is Al-Hasan's saying regarding the words of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with them both: 'And I am not the best of you.' He knew that he was the best of them, but the believer humbles himself. And it was read: 'If You were to show them,' with the hamzah, in place of 'You show me,' as it was read: 'So if You were to show them,' and 'You will surely see the Hellfire.' And this reading is weak. And the saying 'My Lord' is mentioned twice before the condition and before the consequence, encouraging the virtue of supplication and earnestness. They used to deny the promise of punishment and mock it, and their hastening it for that reason, so it was said to them: Indeed, Allah is capable of fulfilling what He has promised if you reflect. So what is the reason for this denial?
