Commentary
And it is recited: 'for their trustworthiness.' The thing that is entrusted and the covenant made is called a trust and a covenant. From it is His saying, 'Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due,' and He said, 'And do not betray your trusts.' And only the eyes are rendered, not the meanings, and the entrusted is betrayed, not the trust itself. The shepherd is the one who is responsible for the preservation and rectification of something, like the shepherd of sheep and the shepherd of the community. It is said: Who is responsible for this thing? Meaning its caretaker and owner. It can also generally refer to everything they were entrusted with and covenanted regarding from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and from the creation, specifically concerning what they carried of the trusts and covenants of the people.
