Commentary
He has imposed the proof upon them in these verses and cut off their excuses and justifications by stating that the one sent to them is a well-known man, whose affairs and condition are known. His inner and outer self is revealed, and it is fitting that one like him be chosen for the message from among them. He has not been afflicted with [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: junoon] so that such a great claim could be made falsely. He did not make this a means to undermine their worldly affairs or to beg for their wealth. He called them only to the religion of Islam, which is the straight path, while highlighting the hidden ailments of theirs, which is their neglect in contemplation and reflection. They are heedless [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: dhin al-abaa al-dhalal] of the religion of their misguided forefathers without any proof. They justify their claim that he is mad after the truth has appeared and the confirmation from Allah has been established through miracles and clear signs. Their dislike for the truth and their turning away from what benefits them from the reminder suggests that these people are described as those who do not believe in the Hereafter, [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: lanakiboon] meaning they are turning away from this mentioned path, which is His saying, 'to a straight path.' And indeed, whoever does not believe in the Hereafter is turning away from the intended goal. When Thumamah ibn Athal al-Hanafi embraced Islam and joined the Yamamah, he prevented the provision from the people of Mecca, and Allah punished them with years of famine until they ate [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: alhalhaz]. Abu Sufyan came to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and said to him: 'I beseech you by Allah and by the ties of kinship, do you not claim that you were sent as a mercy to the worlds?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'You have killed the fathers with the sword and the children with hunger.'
