Commentary
This indicates the greatness of the matter of truth, and that the heavens and the earth have not been established, nor those in them, except by it. If he were to follow their desires, it would turn to falsehood, and what the world stands upon would be lost, and nothing would remain after it. Or he meant that the truth brought by Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, which is Islam, if he were to follow their desires and it turned to polytheism, Allah would bring about the Day of Resurrection and would destroy the world and not delay it. And from Qatadah: the truth is Allah. Its meaning is: if Allah were a god who follows their desires and commands polytheism and sins, He would not be a god but would be a devil, and He would not be able to hold the heavens and the earth by their remembrance, meaning by the Book which is their reminder, that is: their admonition or their advice and their pride: or by the remembrance that they wished for and said: if only we had a reminder from the ancients, we would be the sincere servants of Allah. And it was read: by their remembrance.
