Commentary

In a measure, they are saved with it from harm and reach benefit. Or to the extent that We have taught them of their needs and interests. So We settled it in the earth, as His saying: 'And He caused it to flow as springs in the earth.' And it is said: We made it stable in the earth. And it is said: They are five rivers: the Sayhun, the river of India, and the Jayhun, the river of Balkh. And the Tigris and the Euphrates, the rivers of Iraq, and the Nile, the river of Egypt. Allah sent it down from one spring of the springs of Paradise, entrusted it to the mountains, and caused it to flow in the earth, and made therein benefits for the people in various means of livelihood. And just as He was able to send it down, He is capable of raising it and removing it. And His saying: 'On a departure with it' is one of the most striking and significant for the detail. The meaning is: in a manner of departure with it and a way of its paths. And it indicates the power of the departure, and that nothing is too difficult for Him if He wills it, and it is more eloquent in warning than His saying: 'Say, have you considered if your water were to go down deep into the earth, who could bring you flowing water?' So it is upon the servants to greatly appreciate the blessing of water and to bind it with constant gratitude, and to fear its departure if it is not thanked.
