Commentary
Ibn Abi 'Abla and Ibn Muhaisin read: "lamayitun." The difference between "mayit" and "mayit" is that "mayit" is like "hayy," a fixed attribute. As for "mayit," it indicates occurrence. You say: "Zayd is mayit now," and "mayit tomorrow," like saying he dies. And similar to them: "dayq" and "dayiq," in His saying: "And your heart is constricted by it" (Quran 94:1), He made death, which is the annihilation of life, and resurrection, which is the restoration of what is destroyed and annihilated, two proofs of great power after creation and invention. If you say: Then there is no life except the life of creation and the life of resurrection. I say: In mentioning the two lives, there is no negation of the third, which is the life of the grave. Just as if you mentioned two-thirds of what you have and omitted mentioning one-third, it would not be evidence that the one-third is not with you. Also, the purpose is to mention these three kinds: creation, death, and resurrection, and the omitted mention of them is of the kind of resurrection.
