Commentary
Ibn Abbas said: The scales are the plural of what is weighed. They are the weights of deeds, meaning the righteous ones, which have weight and value with Allah, from His saying, 'So We will not establish for them on the Day of Resurrection any weight.' In Hell, they will remain forever.
Instead of those who have lost themselves, and there is no place for the substitute and the substituted from it, because the connection has no place. Or it could be a news after news for those.
Or it could be a news of a subject that is omitted, 'It scorches.' And Al-Zajjaj said: The scorching and the blowing are one, except that the scorching is more intense. And 'Al-Kaluh' means that the lips contract and pull back from the teeth, as you see in roasted heads. And from Malik ibn Dinar: The reason for the repentance of 'Utbah the boy was that he passed in the market by a head that was taken out of the oven, and he fainted for three days and nights. And it was narrated from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, that he said, 'The scorching of the fire causes his upper lip to contract until it reaches the middle of his head, and his lower lip to droop until it reaches his navel.' [Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, Ahmad, and Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Shu'ab from the narration of Abu Al-Samah from Al-Haytham ibn Abu Said.] And it was read: 'Kaluhun.'
