Commentary
The 'suur' - with a فتح on the waw - is narrated from al-Hasan. And the 'suur' - with both a kasra and a فتح - is narrated from Abu Razein. This is evidence for those who interpreted 'suur' as the plural of 'sura', and negated the genealogies: it is possible that the cutting off occurs among them when they are separated, being punished and rewarded, and that there is no communication or bonding among them except through deeds. Thus, the genealogies are annulled and invalidated, and they are not taken into account due to the absence of affection and mercy among relatives, as a person flees from his brother, his mother, his father, his companion, and his children. And from Ibn Mas'ud: 'And they will not be asked,' with the ت being merged into the س. If you say: This contradicts and is similar to the saying 'And the intimate friend will not ask the intimate friend,' and the saying 'And some of them will approach others, asking each other.' [Mahmoud said: 'If you say this contradicts the saying: So some of them will approach others asking each other,' Ahmad said: 'One should not take this approach in presenting questions about the benefits of the Noble Book, which falsehood cannot approach from before it or behind it, a revelation from the All-Wise, the Praiseworthy. The proper question is to say: My understanding is insufficient to reconcile between these two verses, what is the reasoning? And if someone were to ask Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, about something from the Book of Allah in this manner, he would have struck his back with a stick.'] And His saying 'They will recognize one another,' how can they be reconciled? I say: There are two responses. The first is that the Day of Resurrection lasts for fifty thousand years, during which there are different times and states; they ask and recognize each other in some of them, while in others they are not aware of it due to the severity of horror and fear. [He returned to answer the question. He said: 'The way to reconcile them is to attribute that to the different positions on the Day of Resurrection.' Ahmad said: 'Al-Zamakhshari often seizes the opportunity to deny intercession and rolls up his sleeves to refute those who affirm it when he reaches a verse like 'And intercession will not benefit it, nor will there be any sale or friendship, nor intercession.' He then overlooks the way to reconcile between what appears to negate intercession and what appears to affirm it, by attributing the matter to the different states on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah is the Grantor of success.]. The second is that the mutual denial occurs at the first blow of the trumpet, and when the second blow comes, they stand and recognize each other and ask.
