Commentary
Allah has legislated for every nation to perform rituals for Him: that is, to sacrifice for His sake as a means of drawing closer to Him. He made the reason for this to mention His name, glorified and exalted are His names, upon the sacrifices. It has been recited as مَنْسَكاً with an open 's' and with a broken 's', and it is a source meaning ritual. The broken form can mean the place. So to Him, submit, meaning dedicate the remembrance specifically to Him, and make it for His sake pure, meaning: sincere and not mixed with associating partners. The المخبتون are the humble and submissive, from الخبت which is the calmness of the earth. It is said that they are those who do not oppress, and if they are oppressed, they do not seek revenge. Al-Hasan recited وَالْمُقِيمِي الصَّلاةِ in the accusative case based on the implied 'n'. Ibn Mas'ud recited: and the المقيمين الصلاة, according to the original form.
