Commentary
And the origin is: 'And you have cut yourselves off,' except that the speech has shifted to the third person in a manner of turning away, as if he is lamenting to others about what they have corrupted and condemning their actions before them. He says to them: 'Do you not see the enormity of what these have committed in the religion of Allah?' The meaning is: They have made the matter of their religion among themselves as divisions, just as a group distributes something and divides it among themselves, so this one takes a share and that one takes a share, as an example of their differences in it, and their becoming various factions and parties. Then he warns them that these differing factions will return to Him, and He will hold them accountable and reward them.
