Commentary
He asked his Lord to grant him a child who would inherit him and not leave him alone without an heir. Then he submitted his matter to Allah, saying, 'And You are the best of inheritors.' This means that if You do not grant me one who inherits me, I do not mind, for You are the best inheritor. The improvement of his wife refers to making her suitable for childbirth after she was barren. It is said that it means improving her character as she had a bad disposition.
The pronoun refers to the mentioned prophets, peace be upon them. It indicates that they did not deserve a response to their requests except for their eagerness for good and their hastening to attain it, just as those who are serious about matters do. It has been recited as 'raghaban wa rahaban' with the letters at rest, similar to His saying, 'He fears the Hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his Lord.' 'Khashi'een' means humbled before the command of Allah. Al-Hasan said: They are submissive to the command of Allah. Mujahid said: Humility is the constant fear in the heart. It is also said to mean being humble.
Al-A'mash was asked, and he said: Indeed, I asked Ibrahim, and he said: Do you not know? I said: Inform me. He said: Between him and Allah, when he lowers his veil and closes his door, let Allah see good from him. Perhaps you see that he eats coarsely, wears coarse clothing, and lowers his head.
