Commentary
He turned it over: I flipped it so that its bottom became its top. And he fell over: he turned over. That is, they were upright when they returned to themselves and came with the good thought. Then they fell over and turned away from that state. They began to argue with falsehood and to be obstinate. And these—despite their state being lesser than that of a speaking animal—are deities worshipped, in spite of them. Or they turned away from being debaters for Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, and became debaters against him when they denied the ability to speak. Or they were turned upside down in reality, due to their extreme lowering of their heads in shame and defeat from what Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, had astonished them with. They could not find a response except that which is an argument against them. And it was read: 'They fell over,' with emphasis. And 'They fell over,' in the form of what was named its doer, meaning: they turned themselves upside down. This was read by Ridwan ibn Abd al-Ma'bud.
