Commentary
They used to estimate that he would die and they would gloat over his death. So Allah, glorified and exalted is He, negated this gloating by this, meaning: Allah decreed that no human would remain eternally in this world. Neither you nor they are except susceptible to death. If that is the case, then if you die, will these remain? In this sense, there is the saying of the poet: 'So say to those who gloat over us, awaken! The gloaters will face what we faced.' And it is not that we are cowardly, but rather our fates and the state of our hereafter. So say to those who gloat over us, awaken! The gloaters will face what we faced. This is attributed to Al-Asba' Al-'Adwani. It was said to Furwah ibn Musab Al-Muradi. It was also said to Al-Farazdaq. And 'al-tabb' (with a kasrah) means: the habit and the defect. And 'an' (meaning 'that') is an addition, and it can be for the affirmation of negation, meaning: our habit or defect is not cowardice, but rather those calamities are our destined fates for us, or our defect is our destined fates. And 'state' refers to the turn of victory, because it alternates between the two armies. And 'the gloaters' are those who rejoice in their anger at what has befallen their enemy. And he likened them to the drunkards as a metaphor for their lack of awareness of the consequences, and he commanded them to awaken from their stupor, and he clarified that by saying: 'They will face defeat like what we faced,' and the state will be for us over them, so let them awaken from their intoxication. Meaning: We will test you with what requires patience from calamities, and with what requires gratitude from blessings. To Us is your return, and We will reward you according to what is found in you of patience or gratitude. And it is called a test, although He knows what will be from the actions of the doers before their existence, because it is in the form of a test. And 'fitnah' is a source confirming that We will test you without its wording.
