Commentary
If it is the custom of kings and tyrants that those in their kingdoms do not ask them about their actions and what they bring forth and issue in the management of their kingdom, out of awe and reverence, while the possibility of error and misstep and types of corruption is permissible for them, then the King of kings and Lord of lords, their Creator and Provider, is more deserving that He not be asked about His actions. This is due to what is known and established in minds that all that He does is done by reasons of wisdom, and error is not permissible for Him. [Mahamud said: 'When He, the Exalted, made clear that He is the Lord of lords, their Creator, and their Owner, it is appropriate to point out what is due to Him from His creation in terms of reverence and exaltation. For individual kings prevent their awe from being asked about any action they have done; so what do you think of the Creator of kings and their Lord? Then, individual kings may be subject to error and misstep, and it is established in minds that all the actions of Allah, the Exalted, are done by reasons of wisdom, and error and the doing of vile acts are not permissible for Him.' Ahmad said: 'Cursed be the word that has such poor etiquette with Allah, the Exalted, meaning His saying: reasons of wisdom, for reasons and deterrents are only applicable to the created beings, as in saying: it is due to the reasons of people that they are inclined towards it or deterred from it. And His saying, 'It is not permissible for Him to do vile acts,' I say: this is of the first class, even if it is in the tail: 'I have forgotten, and there is no obligation from the past.' And after the proof of monotheism and the invalidation of polytheism has passed from your hearing, O al-Zamakhshari, and your pen is moist with its affirmation, why did you retreat and turn back? Do you say that anyone is a partner with Allah in His kingdom, doing as he wishes from the actions that you call vile, thus negating them from the power and will of Allah, the Exalted? What is the difference between one who associates a partner with Allah from among the angels and one who associates himself with his Lord until he says: he does and creates for himself whether Allah wills it or not? Exalted is Allah above what the wrongdoers say, greatly exalted. And the Qadarites have accepted for themselves the worst of polytheism, for others have associated partners with the angels, while they have associated partners with themselves and with the devils and jinn and all animals. We seek refuge with the Owner of the kingdom from the paths of destruction.'] And no vile acts [His saying, 'And it is not permissible for Him to do vile acts,' this is according to the Mu'tazila. As for the people of the Sunnah, He is the doer of good and evil, as explained in the science of monotheism. (A)] AND THEY WILL BE ASKED, meaning they are owned, enslaved, and error-prone, so He did not create them to be told: why did you do? in everything they have done.
