46He said, “Do not be afraid. I AM surely with you both. I hear and I see. 47So, come to him and say, ‘We are the messengers of your Lord. So, let the children of Isrā’īl go with us, and do not persecute them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord; and peace be upon the one who follows the guidance. 48Verily, it has been revealed to us that the punishment is for the one who denies and turns away.’”

Commentary

I am with you both, meaning I will protect you and support you. I hear and see what is happening between you and him in words and actions. So I will do what my protection and support for you necessitate. It is possible that your words and actions are estimated, and it is possible that nothing is estimated. It is as if it is said: I am a protector for you both and a supporter who hears and sees. When the protector and supporter are like this, protection is complete and support is valid, and concern for the enemy is removed. The Children of Israel were under the dominion of Pharaoh and the Copts, being tortured by being assigned difficult tasks: digging, building, transporting stones, and forced labor in everything, along with the killing of the boys and the use of the women. 'Indeed, we have come to you with a sign from your Lord' is a general statement flowing from the first statement, which is 'Indeed, we are the messengers of your Lord,' as an explanation and clarification. The claim of messengership is only established by its proof, which is the coming with the sign. He only mentioned 'with a sign' and did not mention it in the plural, even though there are two signs with it, because the intention in this context is to affirm the claim with its evidence. It is as if he said: We have come to you with a miracle, proof, and argument for what we have claimed regarding the messengership. Similarly, 'Indeed, I have come to you with a clear proof from your Lord,' so bring a sign if you are among the truthful. Even if I come to you with something clear, it means: and the peace of the angels who are the guardians of Paradise upon the guided ones, and the reproach of the guardians of Hell and punishment upon the disbelievers.
