Commentary
They suggested, as was their habit of obstinacy, a verse regarding prophethood. It was said to them: Did not a verse come to you that is the mother of the verses and the greatest of them in the realm of miracles, meaning the Qur'an? This is because the Qur'an is the proof of what is in the other revealed books and a testament to its validity, for it is a miracle, while those are not miracles. They are dependent on its testimony for the validity of what is in them, just as the one being argued against is dependent on the testimony of the proof. And it was read: the scrolls, with the lightening of the letters. The pronoun refers back to the evidence, as it is in the meaning of proof and testimony.
