Commentary
When Adam and Eve, peace be upon them, were the origin of humanity, and the two reasons from which they arose and branched out: they were made as if they were humanity in themselves, so they were addressed as such. It was said, 'So if they come to you' in the plural form. An analogy of this is attributing the action to the cause, which in reality is for the effect: guidance, a Book, and a Sharia. Ibn Abbas said: Allah has guaranteed for whoever follows the Quran that he will not go astray in this world nor suffer in the Hereafter. Then he recited the saying, 'So whoever follows My guidance will not go astray and will not suffer.' The meaning is that suffering in the Hereafter is a punishment for those who went astray in this world from the path of religion. So whoever follows the Book of Allah, obeys its commands, and refrains from its prohibitions will be saved from misguidance and its punishment.
