Commentary
So exalted is Allah, the True King. This is a glorification of Him and of what He commands and prohibits His servants, and of His promise and warning, and the management between His reward and punishment according to their deeds, and other matters that pertain to the affairs of His dominion. When the Quran and its revelation are mentioned, He said as a digression: 'And when Gabriel teaches you what is revealed to you from the Quran, then be patient until he hears you and understands you. Then turn to him with caution afterward, and do not let your recitation be in accordance with his recitation.' This is similar to His saying: 'Do not hasten your tongue with it to make haste with it.' It is said that its meaning is: 'Do not reach what was ambiguous from him until the clarification comes to you.' And it is recited: 'Until His revelation is completed to you.' And His saying: 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge' includes humility before Allah and gratitude to Him when He taught what is arranged in learning. That is, 'You have taught me, O Lord, a subtlety in the matter of learning and a beautiful etiquette that I did not have, so increase me in knowledge upon knowledge, for indeed, You have wisdom and knowledge in everything.' It is said that Allah did not command His Messenger to seek increase in anything except in knowledge.
