Commentary
‘Bitter is that for which they have sold themselves, that they should disbelieve in what Allah has revealed. The specific condemnation is that they disbelieve and they have sold, meaning they have traded out of envy and seeking what does not belong to them. This is the reason for their selling, that they envy Allah for His favor, which is the revelation to whom He wills. His wisdom necessitates sending it. So they have incurred wrath upon wrath, and they have become deserving of a wrath that is synonymous, because they disbelieved in the Prophet of truth and acted unjustly against him. It is said that they disbelieved in Muhammad after Jesus. It is also said after their statement: 'Uzair is the son of Allah,' and their saying: 'The hand of Allah is tied,' and other types of their disbelief in what Allah has revealed. They claim: 'We believe in what has been revealed to us,' while they disbelieve in what is beyond it, meaning they said this while they disbelieved in what is beyond the Torah, which is the truth confirming what is with them from it and not contradicting it. This is a refutation of their statement because if they disbelieved in what agrees with the Torah, they have disbelieved in it. Mahmoud, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 'If they disbelieve in what agrees with the Torah... etc.' Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 'This very point is what leads to the disbelief of the Qadarites according to one of the opinions of Malik, Shafi'i, and Qadi, may Allah be pleased with them. The correct Sunni beliefs are interconnected and compatible, confirming one another. Denying one of them is disbelief in it, and then disbelief in all of them. We ask Allah, the Exalted, for protection.' Then they were challenged for killing the prophets while claiming to believe in the Torah, and the Torah does not permit the killing of prophets.
