And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scriptures. They read the Torah and do not verify what is in it. They do not know the Book, the Torah, except for wishes, except for what they have of their wishes. And Allah forgives them and has mercy on them, and does not hold them accountable for their sins. And their fathers, the prophets, intercede for them. And what their scholars wish for them is that the Fire will not touch them except for a few days. And it was said: except for various lies they heard from their scholars and accepted them by imitation. A Bedouin said to Ibn Dhab: Is this something you narrated, or something you wished for, or something you fabricated? It was said: except for what they read from the saying: 'He wished for the Book of Allah on the first night.' The meaning of wishing for the Book of Allah is that he recited it and followed in its recitation, like the wishing of Dawood, peace be upon him, for the Psalms, meaning his recitation of the Psalms to the messengers. And the last of it met the death of predestination. And death is predestined, from the saying of Allah about something: He has decreed it. The derivation is from 'wishing' when it is decreed, because the one who wishes estimates in himself and guesses what he wishes for. Likewise, the one who fabricates and the reader estimates that such a word comes after such a word. And 'except for wishes' is from the disconnected exception. And it was read: 'wishes' with the lightening. The scholars who opposed with distortion while having knowledge and certainty were mentioned, then the common people who imitated them. It was pointed out that they are equally in misguidance, because the scholar must act according to his knowledge, and the common person should not be satisfied with imitation and conjecture while he is capable of knowledge. They write the distorted Book with their own hands, which is an affirmation. This is from the means of affirmation, just as you say to someone who denies knowing what he wrote: O this, you wrote it with your own right hand. From what they earn from bribes.
