Commentary
Al-manna is to count on someone who has done good to you by his goodness, and to mean that he has made you and obligated you to a right for him. They used to say: When you do a good deed, forget it. And for some of them:
And if a man does a favor to me... and reminds me of it once, he is truly base. [He says: And if a man gives me a gift and reminds me of it once, he is base. Meaning he is eloquent in baseness and meanness.]
In the Nobles of Words: Sunwan [Mawlid said: 'In the Nobles of Words, Sunwan... etc.' Ahmad said: 'Then' in its original placement indicates a delay in the time of the conjunction with what it is joined to, and what is between them. Al-Zamakhshari carries it on the difference in ranks and distance between them, as he cannot carry it on the delay in time due to the context that rejects that, like this verse: And its essence is that it is borrowed from the distance of times to the distance of rank. And I have another possible meaning in this verse and similar ones: which is the indication of the continuity of the action joined by it and the length of time in its continuity. So on this, it has not departed from indicating the distance of time. But its original meaning is the delay in the time of the occurrence of the action and its happening, and its borrowed meaning is the continuity of the existence of the action and the delay in the time of its remaining. And thus is the meaning of Allah's saying (Then they remained steadfast), meaning they continued in steadfastness for a prolonged time. And that steadfastness is what is considered, not what is interrupted to its opposite from deviation to desires and passions. Likewise, His saying: (Then they do not follow what they have spent with reminders or harm), meaning they continue to forget the good and to refrain from counting it and being ungrateful, they are not abandoning it in times to harm and imitating favors because of it, then they repent, and Allah knows best. And similar to this or like it is that the 's' accompanies the action to relieve the time of its occurrence and delay it. Then the saying of Allah was narrated from Al-Khalil, peace be upon him: (Indeed, I am going to my Lord; He will guide me). And Allah has narrated in such a verse (He who created me, and He will guide me). So there is no way to carry the 's' on the delay of the time of guidance for him, so it must be carried on the continuity of the guidance that has occurred for him and the delay of its remaining and the prolongation of its duration. And perhaps Al-Zamakhshari hinted at this meaning in the verse of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, so I hope this meaning is more appropriate than what Al-Zamakhshari carried in the verse of Al-Baqarah. And this verse remains more truthful and closer to the original in the best way, and Allah is the Grantor of success.] From granting the one who asks and being generous, and from withholding the one who is in need and being stingy. And in it: the taste of blessings [The saying 'And in it the taste of blessings' in the correct books: blessings are the bounties, and its singular is 'ala' with a fathah. And it also includes: blessings - with a fathah - are beautiful-looking trees with a pleasant taste. And the name of the bounties is on the pattern of 'asbab'. And it appears that the name of the tree is on the pattern of 'sahab', so let what is in the Nobles be clarified.] is sweeter than al-manna and more bitter than blessings with al-manna. And harm is to be arrogant towards him because of what he has done for him. And the meaning of 'then' is to show the difference between spending and refraining from al-manna and harm, and that leaving them is better than the very act of spending, just as steadfastness in faith is better than entering into it by His saying: (Then they remained steadfast). If you say: What is the difference between His saying: For them is their reward and His saying later: (For them is their reward)? I say: The relative clause here does not imply a condition. And it implied it there. And the difference between them in terms of meaning is that the 'fa' in it indicates that by spending, he has earned the reward, and its absence is devoid of that indication.
