The letter ب in بِأَيْدِيكُمْ is an addition, similar to its use in أعطى بيده for the submissive. The meaning is: do not bring about your own destruction with your own hands, meaning do not make it so that it takes hold of you and controls you. It is said that (بأيديكم) means by yourselves. It is also said that its intended meaning is: do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands, as it is said: so-and-so caused his own destruction by his own hands, when he led to his own ruin. The meaning is a prohibition against refraining from spending in the way of Allah, as it is a cause of destruction, or against extravagance in spending until one impoverishes oneself and neglects one’s family. Or it is a prohibition against fighting and risking one’s life, or against abandoning jihad, which strengthens the enemy. It has been narrated that a man from the emigrants charged at the enemy ranks, and the people shouted at him: he has thrown himself into destruction with his own hands. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari said: we know this verse better, for it was revealed about us. We accompanied the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and supported him, and we witnessed battles with him, and we preferred him over our families, wealth, and children. When Islam spread and its people increased, and the war was laid to rest, we returned to our families, children, and wealth to set things right and establish ourselves in them. Thus, the destruction was in remaining with family and wealth and abandoning jihad. [This was narrated by al-Thalabi through the route of Uthman al-Darimi, who reported to us from Abdullah ibn Salih from al-Layth from Yazid ibn Abi Habib from Aslam ibn Imran - and he mentioned it as is. Its origin is found in Abu Dawood, al-Nasa'i, and al-Tirmidhi from the narration of the aforementioned Aslam. He said: 'We left Medina intending for Constantinople. And the group was led by Abdul Rahman ibn Khalid ibn al-Walid. A great number of Romans came out from Medina, and we lined up a great line of Muslims against them. A man from the Muslims charged at the Roman ranks until he entered among them. The people shouted: he has thrown himself into destruction with his own hands. Abu Ayyub said: O people, the narration - and in the narration of al-Tirmidhi: 'and the people were led by Fudala ibn Ubaid' and in the narration of al-Nasa'i: 'and the people of Egypt were led by Uqbah ibn Khalid' and 'and the people of Sham were led by Fudala.' This was also narrated by Ahmad, Ishaq, Abu Ya'la, al-Tabari, Abd ibn Hamid, Ibn Abi Hatim, and others.] Abu Ali in al-Halabiat narrated from Abu Ubaidah that destruction, ruin, and demise are one. He said: this indicates from the words of Abu Ubaidah that destruction is a source. Similar to what Sibawayh narrated about their saying: al-tadrah and al-tasrah and similar terms in entities: al-tanadbah and al-tanflah. It can be said that its origin is destruction like al-tajribah and al-tabsirah and similar terms, as it is a source from هلك (halaka) and the kasrah was replaced with a dammah, as in الجوار (al-jawar) in al-jawar.
