Commentary
It is narrated that Mu'adh ibn Jabal and Thalabah ibn Ghannam, the Ansar, said: O Messenger of Allah, why does the crescent moon appear thin like a thread, then increase until it is full and even, then it continues to decrease until it returns to how it was, not remaining in one state? So the verse was revealed: "Mawqit, a measure by which people time their farms, their trades, their debts, their fasting and breaking of fast, the number of their women, their menstruation days, their pregnancy durations, and other matters, and measures for the pilgrimage by which its time is known." There were some people from the Ansar who, when they entered into ihram, none of them would enter a garden, house, or tent from the door. If he was from the people of mud, he would make a hole in the back of his house to enter and exit, or he would make a ladder to climb. If he was from the people of tents, he would exit from behind the tent. It was said to them: "Righteousness is not in your avoiding entering through the door, but righteousness is in the one who fears what Allah has made forbidden." If you say: What is the connection of this to what came before? I say: It is as if it was said to them when they asked about the moons and the wisdom in their decrease—its completion is known—that everything Allah, glorified and exalted is He, does is only with great wisdom and benefit for His servants. So leave off questioning about it and look at one thing you do that is not righteousness at all, while you think it is righteousness. It is possible that this is mentioned as a digression because it was mentioned that they are measures for the pilgrimage, as it was one of their actions in pilgrimage. It is also possible that this is due to their inversion in their question, and that their example in it is like someone who leaves the door of the house and enters from the back. The meaning is: Righteousness and what you should be upon is not to invert in your questions, but righteousness is the righteousness of the one who fears that and avoids it and does not dare to do something like it. Then he said: "And enter houses by their doors," meaning: and engage in matters from the ways they should be engaged in and do not invert. The intended meaning is the obligation of settling the souls and binding the hearts to the fact that all actions of Allah are wisdom and correctness, without any doubt or objection in that, so that no one asks about it due to the ambiguity in questioning that leads to doubt: "He is not asked about what He does, but they are asked."
