Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day, by which each one follows the other, as His saying: "He made the night and the day successive" is a sign for those who benefit from what is beneficial to them, whether it is what is carried in them or what benefits people. If you say: Is the saying "and He spread therein" an addition to "He sent down" or to "He gave life"? I say: It appears that it is an addition to "He sent down" and is included under the ruling of the connection, because the saying: "And He gave life to the earth by it" is an addition to "He sent down," thus they are connected and both become like a single thing, as if it were said: And what was sent down in the earth from water and what was spread therein of every creature.

And it is permissible to connect it to "He gave life" in the sense that He gave life to the earth with the rain and spread therein of every creature, for they grow with fertility and live by rain.

And the directing of the winds in their directions: from the east, and the west, and the south, and the north. And in their states: hot, cold, stormy, gentle, barren, and fruitful. It is said that sometimes they are with mercy, and sometimes with punishment. And the clouds that are made submissive are made for the winds to move them in the atmosphere by the will of Allah, raining wherever He wills.

Indeed, there are signs for a people who understand, who look with the eyes of their minds and reflect, for they are indications of great power and manifest wisdom. And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, "Woe to the one who recites this verse and does not reflect upon it." That is, he does not think about it or take it into consideration. And it is read: "and the ship," with two dammas. And the directing of the wind is mentioned in the singular.
