Commentary
And We will surely test you, and We will surely strike you with a blow that resembles the action of the tester regarding your conditions. Will you be patient and steadfast in what you are upon of obedience and submit to the command of Allah and His judgment or not? With a little of each of these calamities and a part of it. And give good tidings to the patient ones who say when afflicted by a calamity: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return.' For indeed, the act of saying this is submission and acceptance. And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, 'Whoever says this at the time of calamity, Allah will compensate him for his calamity and grant him a good outcome and provide him with a righteous replacement that he will be pleased with.' [Narrated by al-Tabari, al-Tabarani, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu'ab from the narration of Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn Abbas, who said regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: 'Those who, when disaster strikes them, say...' The verse: 'Indeed, the believer, when he submits to the command of Allah and says this at the time of calamity, secures three qualities of goodness: prayer from Allah, mercy, and the realization of the path of guidance.' And the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Whoever says this...' And he mentioned it.] And it has been narrated that the lamp of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was extinguished, and he said: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return.' It was said: 'Is it a calamity?' He said: 'Yes, everything that harms the believer is a calamity for him.' [Narrated by Abu Dawood in al-Marasel from the hadith of Imran al-Qasir, who said: The lamp of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was extinguished, and he said this. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: 'This is just a lamp.' He said: 'Everything that harms the believer is a calamity.'] And he minimized in his saying: 'With a little' to indicate that every calamity that befalls a person, no matter how great, is less than what is above it. And to ease it for them and show them that His mercy is with them in every situation and does not depart from them. And He promised them that before it occurs so that they may prepare their souls for it. (And loss) is connected to: (with a little) or to fear, meaning: and something of loss of wealth. The address in: (And give good tidings) is to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, or to anyone who can convey the good tidings. And regarding al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, in fear: the fear of Allah. And hunger: fasting the month of Ramadan, and loss of wealth: zakat and charity, and of lives: diseases, and of fruits: the death of children. [Mahamud, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 'And al-Shafi'i, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The fear is the fear of Allah, and hunger is fasting the month of Ramadan, and loss of wealth is zakat, and of lives is diseases, and of fruits is the death of children.' Ahmad said: 'In this interpretation, there is a consideration, for this trial is promised in the future, mentioned before its occurrence to prepare for it upon its arrival. And perhaps there is no calamity mentioned except that it has preceded them before the verse was revealed, as the fear of Allah, the Exalted, has always been filled in the hearts of the believers. And it is unlikely that it would be expressed as a loss when the charity is expressed by the zakat, which is growth against loss and has been narrated: 'Wealth is not diminished by charity.' And it can be said that it is a loss in a sense, and it is called zakat in consideration of what it leads to in terms of growth, for the hoped-for compensation from the generosity of Allah is a replacement. So when Allah, the Exalted, mentioned it in the context of the promised trial, He expressed it as zakat to facilitate its giving for the one obligated, for when he senses the compensation from Allah, the Exalted, and the growth of his wealth through it, it becomes easy for him to give it, and his soul becomes generous for that.] And from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, when a servant's child dies, Allah, the Exalted, says to the angels: 'Did you take the child of My servant?' They say: 'Yes.' He says: 'Did you take the fruit of his heart?' They say: 'Yes.' Allah, the Exalted, says: 'What did My servant say?' They say: 'He praised You and said this.' Allah, the Exalted, says: 'Build for My servant a house in Paradise and name it the House of Praise.' [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi who said: 'It is good and strange.' And narrated by Ahmad and others from the hadith. And Ibn Hibban authenticated it. And al-Bayhaqi narrated it in al-Shu'ab, both as a raised and a stopped narration.] And prayer: is tenderness and compassion, so it was placed in the position of mercy and combined with mercy. As in His saying: 'Tenderness and mercy.' (Indeed, He is tender and merciful.) And the meaning is: upon them is tenderness after tenderness. And mercy, meaning any mercy. And those are the guided ones to the path of righteousness, as they have submitted and accepted the command of Allah.
