Commentary
That is, make this city or this place a secure land, as in His saying: (a pleasing life). Or secure from within it, as in His saying: a sleeping night. And whoever disbelieves among them is a substitute for his people, meaning provide sustenance for the believers from his people specifically. And whoever disbelieves is connected to the one who believes, just as (and from my descendants) is connected to the one who is making you. If you say: Why did Ibrahim, blessings of Allah be upon him, specify the believers with sustenance until he responded to him? I say: He compared sustenance to leadership and defined the difference between them, because succession is a trust that is specific to one who advises for the pasture, and the most distant from advising is the oppressor. In contrast, sustenance may be a means of entrapment for the one who receives it and a binding proof against him. The meaning is: And provide for the one who disbelieves, so I will enjoy him. And it is permissible that (and whoever disbelieves) is a subject implying a condition. And His saying (so I will enjoy him) is the answer to the condition, meaning: And whoever disbelieves, so I will enjoy him. And it was read: so I will enjoy him, so I will compel him [[The saying 'so I will compel him' is from the recitation: then I will compel him (A)]] and I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, as the compelled one who cannot refrain from what he is compelled to do. And Ubayy read: so I will enjoy him for a little while, then I will compel him. And Yahya ibn Wathab read: so I will compel him, with a broken hamzah. And Ibn Abbas read: so I will enjoy him for a little while, then compel him, in the form of a command. The intended meaning is the supplication from Ibrahim; he prayed to his Lord with that. If you say: How is the estimation of the speech in this reading? I say: In (he said) there is a pronoun referring to Ibrahim, meaning Ibrahim said after his request for the believers to be provided for: And whoever disbelieves, so I will enjoy him for a little while, then I will compel him. And Ibn Muhaisin read: so I will compel him, by merging the dhad into the ta as they say: lie down, and it is a rejected language, because the dhad is one of the five letters that can merge with its neighbors, but it cannot be merged into what is next to it, and they are the letters 'Dham Shafra'.
