Indeed, We have sent you to give good news and to warn, not to compel belief. This is a consolation for the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, and a relief for him, because he was distressed and his chest was tight due to their insistence and determination on disbelief. And We do not ask you about the companions of the Hellfire, why they have not believed after you have conveyed and exerted your utmost effort in calling them, as His saying goes: 'So your duty is only to convey, and upon Us is the reckoning.' And it has been read: 'And you will not be asked' in the sense of prohibition. It has been narrated that he said: I wish I knew what happened to my parents, so he was prohibited from asking about the conditions of the disbelievers and concerning the enemies of Allah. It was said that its meaning is to emphasize what the disbelievers have fallen into of punishment, as you say: How is so-and-so? asking about someone in a calamity, and it is said to you: Do not ask about him. The reason for this emphasis is that the inquirer fears that something horrifying will be uttered regarding what he is in, so do not ask him and do not burden him with what distresses him, or you, O inquirer, are unable to hear his news due to its distressing nature and the annoyance it brings, so do not ask.
