118Those who do not know say: “Why is it that Allah does not speak to us, nor does a sign come to us?” So spoke those before them as these people do. Their hearts resemble each other. We have indeed made the signs clear for the people who have certitude.

Commentary

And those who do not know said, and the ignorant among the polytheists said, and it was said from the People of the Book, and knowledge was denied from them because they did not act upon it: 'Why does Allah not speak to us? Why does He not speak to us as He speaks to the angels and spoke to Moses?' Out of arrogance from them and rebellion. Or 'a sign should come to us' in denial that what has come to them from the signs of Allah are signs, and in disdain for them. Their hearts have become alike, meaning the hearts of these and those before them in blindness, as He said: 'Did they enjoin one another to this?' We have certainly clarified the signs for a people who act justly, so they may be certain that they are signs that must be acknowledged and submitted to, and that are sufficient for them over others.
