Commentary
And to Allah belongs the east and the west. That is, the lands of the east and the west, and the entire earth belongs to Allah; He is its owner and caretaker. So wherever you turn, in any place you perform the turning, it means to turn your faces towards the qiblah, as evidenced by His saying: (So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces towards it). There is the face of Allah, meaning the direction that He commanded and is pleased with. The meaning is that if you are prevented from praying in the Sacred Mosque or in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, then the earth has been made for you a mosque, so pray in any spot you wish from its places, and perform the turning there, for turning is possible in every place; it is not restricted to residing in one mosque over another or in one place over another. Indeed, Allah is All-Encompassing in mercy; He intends to make things easy for His servants and to facilitate for them. He is All-Knowing of their interests. And from Ibn Umar, it was revealed regarding the prayer of the traveler on his mount, wherever it turns. And from Ata: A group was confused about the qiblah and prayed in different directions. When they awoke, they realized their mistake and were excused. It was said: Its meaning is, wherever you turn for supplication and remembrance, and it was not intended for prayer. And Al-Hasan read: So wherever you turn, with an open 'ta' from the turning, meaning: So wherever you direct yourselves towards the qiblah.
