Commentary
Junaḥ ibn Ḥubaysh read 'wuddan' with a kasrah: and the meaning is that love will occur in their hearts, and He will plant it for them therein without any affection from them or exposure to the causes that necessitate love, which people acquire through kinship, friendship, or acts of kindness, or other than that. Rather, it is an invention from Him, beginning a special honor for His allies, just as He cast fear and awe into the hearts of their enemies, in magnification and reverence for their status. The 's' may be because the surah is Meccan, and the believers at that time were despised among the disbelievers, so Allah promised them that when Islam would spread. Or it may be on the Day of Resurrection, He will endear them to His creation by what is presented of their good deeds and what is published from the record of their actions. It is narrated that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: 'O Ali, say: O Allah, make for me a covenant with You, and place love for me in the hearts of the believers.' [Narrated by Al-Tha'labi and Al-Tabarani in the Musnad of Hamzah Al-Zayyat, and Ibn Mardawayh from the hadith of Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with them both, and in it is Ishaq ibn Bishr from Khalid ibn Zayd, and they are both rejected.] Then Allah revealed this verse. And from Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: it means Allah loves them and makes them beloved to His creation. And from the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him: 'Allah, the Exalted, says: O Jibril, I have loved so-and-so, so love him.' Then Jibril loves him, and then he calls out to the inhabitants of the heavens: 'Indeed, Allah has loved so-and-so, so love him.' Then the inhabitants of the heavens love him, and then He places love for him in the hearts of the people on earth.' And from Qatadah: A servant does not turn to Allah except that Allah turns the hearts of the servants towards him.
