The waw in 'they do not possess' is said to be a pronoun. Mahmoud said: "It is possible that the waw in 'they do not possess' is a pronoun..." Ahmad said: "In this interpretation, there is an overreach because if it is made a sign for one who has lost, its meaning is revealed and it is clear that it encompasses a group. Then it returns to its singular form with the pronoun 'who has taken.' In this, there is a return to its wording after returning to its meaning in a way that contradicts that, which is rejected by them because it is a generalization after clarification. This is a reversal in the path of eloquence, and its clear path is clarification after generalization. The waw, in its grammatical analysis, although it does not refer back to anyone, reveals its meaning like the pronoun that refers back to it. So pay attention to this construction, for it is more eloquent than criticism: 'In the neck of the beautiful one, the contract is appreciated.' This is for the servants, and it is indicated by the mention of the righteous and the criminals because they are on this division. It may also be a sign for the plural, like that in 'They eat the fleas.' The subject is 'who has taken' because it is in the meaning of the plural, and the place of 'who has taken' is raised as a substitute or as the subject. It may also be in the accusative case due to the assumed omission of the added word, meaning: except for the intercession of 'who has taken.' The intended meaning is: they do not possess the ability to intercede for them, and taking the covenant means seeking support through faith and action. Ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said to his companions one day: "Is any of you unable to take a covenant with Allah every morning and evening?" They said: "How is that?" He said: "He says every morning and evening: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, I bear witness to You that there is no deity except You alone, with no partner for You, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger, and that if You leave me to myself, I will be drawn closer to evil and further away from good, and I do not rely except on Your mercy. So make for me a covenant with You that You will fulfill for me on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not break the promise." If he says that, it is sealed with a seal and placed under the Throne. When the Day of Resurrection comes, a caller will call out: "Where are those who have a covenant with the Most Merciful?" Then they will enter Paradise. This was narrated by Al-Thalabi. Abu Wa'il narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud - and he mentioned it in full. Ibn Mardawayh narrated in the interpretation of Al-Ahzab through the route of 'Awf ibn Abdullah from a man from Banu Sulaym from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, who said that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The covenant is to say: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth - and he mentioned it briefly. There is also a narration from Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, which Al-Hakim Al-Tirmidhi reported in the rarities in the seventy-sixth after the hundred." It was said: the word of testimony. Or it could be from 'the prince's covenant to so-and-so with this' if he commanded him with it, meaning: no one intercedes except the one commanded to intercede and permitted to do so. This is supported by verses in the revelation: 'And how many angels in the heavens do not avail at all except after Allah has given permission to whom He wills and is pleased.' 'And intercession will not benefit with Him except for whom He has permitted.' 'On that Day, intercession will not benefit except for whom the Most Merciful has permitted and for whom He has accepted their words.'
