Commentary
I hastened upon him with such: if you hasten him from it, meaning: do not hasten for them to be destroyed and perish, until you and the Muslims can be at ease from their evils, and the earth is purified by cutting off their roots. There is nothing between you and what you seek of their destruction except for a limited number of days and counted breaths, as if they are in the speed of the hour that you count if it were counted. And similar is His saying, 'And do not hasten for them,' as if they, on the day they see what is promised to them, have not remained except for an hour of the day. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that he would cry when he recited it and said: the end of the count is the departure of your soul, the end of the count is the separation from your family, the end of the count is the entering of your grave. And from Ibn al-Sammak, that he was with Al-Ma'mun and recited it, and said: if the breaths are by number and there is no extension for them, how quickly they will run out.
