Commentary

Laghw: excess words and what has no benefit beneath it. In it, there is a clear warning about the necessity of avoiding laghw and being cautious of it, as Allah has purified the abode where there is no obligation from it. How beautiful is His saying, 'And when they pass by laghw, they pass by with dignity. And when they hear laghw, they turn away from it and say, 'To us are our deeds, and to you are your deeds. Peace be upon you; we do not seek the ignorant.' We seek refuge with Allah from laghw, ignorance, and engaging in what does not concern us. That is: if the greeting of some of them to one another or the greeting of the angels upon them is laghw, then they hear no laghw except that, it is from the realm of the saying:

'And there is no fault in them except that their swords... have remnants from the clash of the battalions.' [[The explanation of this evidence has been presented on page 142 of the second volume, so refer to it if you wish, the corrector said.]]

Or they hear in it only words in which they are safe from fault and deficiency, on the basis of an interrupted exception. [[Mahamud said: 'It is permissible that it is from the saying:

'And there is no fault in them except that their swords... have remnants from the clash of the battalions.'

And that it is an interrupted exception.' Ahmad said: 'The difference between the two views is that he made the remnants a fault in a figurative sense, completely negating the fault, as if he is saying: if the remnants of the swords from the clash are a fault, then they are people of fault, meaning: and if it is not a fault, then there is no fault in them at all, because there is nothing other than this, so after this figurative expression and assumption, it is an uninterrupted exception.]]

Or because the meaning of peace is a prayer for safety. [[He returned to his words. He said: 'And it is permissible that it is connected on the basis that peace is a prayer for safety... etc.' Ahmad said: 'This makes it connected based on the original meaning, not like the first which arises from metaphor. In this regard, there is more, because it necessitates the certainty that in Paradise, laghw and excess exist, and far is Allah from that; there is no ghoulishness in it nor laghw.]]

And the abode of peace: it is the abode of safety, and its people are free from the prayer for safety, so its apparent meaning is from the realm of laghw and excess words, were it not for what contains the benefit of honor.

Some people eat one meal [[The saying 'some people eat one meal' means they eat once every day and night, and they have made it an obligation upon themselves if they have accustomed themselves to that, as stated in the authentic sources. (A)]]. And some of them eat whenever they find it - this is the habit of the famished.

And some have lunch and dinner - this is the praiseworthy middle habit, and there is neither night nor day, but on the condition, and because the one who enjoys among the Arabs is the one who finds lunch and dinner. It was said: he meant the continuity of sustenance and its flow, as you say: I am with so-and-so in the morning and evening, wanting: the permanence, and not intending the known times.
