Commentary
By the signs of his Lord in the Quran, and therefore the pronoun returns to it in the saying, 'that they may understand it.'
So he turned away from it and did not remember when he was reminded, nor did he reflect, and he forgot the consequence of what his hands have sent forth of disbelief and sins, without thinking about it or considering that the wrongdoer and the doer of good must have a recompense. Then he explained their turning away and forgetting by saying that their hearts are sealed. He gathered after the individuals, carrying on the meaning of 'from' and its meaning, 'So they will not be guided,' so there will be no guidance from them at all, as if it is impossible for them due to their strong determination forever during the entire period of obligation. And thus it is a recompense and a response, indicating the negation of their guidance to the call of the Messenger, meaning that they made what should be a cause for the existence of guidance a cause for its negation. And it is also a response to the Messenger, assuming he said: 'Why do I not call them, eager for their Islam?' It was said: 'And if you call them to guidance, they will not be guided.'
