56We send the messengers only as bearers of good tidings and warnings, and those who disbelieve raise disputes on the basis of the false (arguments), so that they may nullify the truth with it; and they have taken My signs, and the warnings given to them, as mockery.

Commentary

To refute, to remove and nullify, from the slipping of the foot, which is its sliding and removal from its place. And what they were warned of can be that 'what' is relative, and the return from the connection is omitted, meaning: and what they were warned of from the punishment. Or it can be a source meaning: and their warning. And it has been recited: 'mocked,' with a pause, meaning: they took it as a place of mockery. And their argument is: their saying to the messengers, 'You are nothing but humans like us, and if Allah had willed, He would have sent down angels,' and similar statements.
