Commentary
The Book is for the species, and it is the records of deeds. O woe to us! They call out about their destruction, which they have perished in, especially among the destructions, whether small or large. It is a matter of encompassing, meaning: He does not leave anything of sins except that He has counted it, that is: He has counted them all, as you say: He has not given me a little or a lot, because things are either small or large. It is permissible that he means: or they had small and large sins. It is said: They did not avoid the major sins, so the minor sins were written upon them, which is the discussion. And from Ibn Abbas: The minor sin is smiling, and the major sin is loud laughter. And from Said ibn Jubair: The minor sin is touching, and the major sin is adultery. And from Al-Fudail: When he would read it, he would say: They have indeed complained to Allah about the minor sins before the major sins, except that He has counted them, and they found what they had done present in the records, ready. Or as a reward for what they have done, and your Lord does not wrong anyone by writing upon him what he has not done. Or He increases the punishment of the deserving, or punishes him without a crime, as is claimed by those who wrong Allah in punishing the children of the polytheists for the sins of their parents.
