45Give them the example of the worldly life; it is like water We sent down from the sky, then the vegetation of the earth was mingled with it, and then it turned into chaff that is blown by the winds, and Allah is powerful over everything.

Commentary

So the vegetation of the earth mixed with it, and it wrapped around because of it and thickened until some of it mixed with some. It is said: The water became mixed in the vegetation until it was watered and became lush. The saying 'lush' means that it sparkled and shone. The lush tree is when its leaves are fresh. The correct wording according to this interpretation is: So it mixed with the vegetation of the earth. The reason for its correctness is that everything mixed is described by the quality of its companion.

And the dry twigs are what has been shattered and broken; the singular is a dry twig. And it has been read: The wind scatters it. And from Ibn Abbas: The winds scatter it, from 'adhra: it resembles the state of this world in its freshness and beauty and what follows it of destruction and annihilation, to the state of vegetation that is green and lush. Then it withers, and the winds carry it away as if it had not been. And Allah is All-Powerful over everything in creation and annihilation.
