Commentary
The term 'walayah' with an open vowel means support and taking charge, and with a broken vowel it means authority and kingship. Both readings have been recited. The meaning there is, in that position and state, support is for Allah alone; no one else possesses it, nor can anyone else achieve it. This confirms His saying: 'And there was no group to help him besides Allah.' Or, there the authority and kingship belong to Allah; it cannot be overpowered or withheld from Him. In such a severe situation, Allah takes charge and every distressed person believes in Him. This means that his saying, 'Oh, I wish I had not associated anything with my Lord,' is a word he resorts to, uttered in despair from the calamity of his disbelief. If it were not for that, he would not have said it. It is also possible that the meaning is: there the authority belongs to Allah, who supports His believing allies against the disbelievers and avenges them, and relieves their hearts from their enemies. This means that He supported the believer against the disbeliever, affirming his words: 'Perhaps my Lord will give me better than your garden and send upon it a calamity from the sky.' His saying, 'Good is the reward and good is the outcome,' refers to His allies. It is said that 'there' refers to the Hereafter, meaning in that abode, the authority belongs to Allah, as in His saying: 'To whom belongs the dominion today?' The word 'truth' has been read in the nominative and genitive as an attribute of authority. Allah said: 'It has been read in the nominative and genitive as an attribute of authority...' Ahmad said: 'It has been previously denied that such a saying implies that the readings are subject to the opinions of the eloquent and the efforts of the articulate, which vary in eloquence due to their differences in it. This is a serious error. The truth is that no one is permitted to recite except what he has heard and memorized, connected to the revelation sent down to him ﷺ from the sky. Thus, the eloquence of the eloquent has no bearing; rather, he is a transmitter like others. However, Al-Zamakhshari does not miss the opportunity to praise the head of innovation and the source of sedition, for Amr ibn Ubaid was the first to insist on denying predestination and so on to other innovations of the Mu'tazilah, and thus he praised him.' Amr ibn Ubaid read with the accusative for emphasis, as in your saying: 'This is the servant of Allah, the truth, not the falsehood,' and it is a good and eloquent reading. Amr ibn Ubaid was among the most eloquent and sincere of people. The word 'عُقْباً' has been read with a dammah on the qaf and with a sukoon, and 'عقبى' in the form of 'فَعْلى,' all of which mean the outcome.
