Commentary
And he was encompassed by it, which means his destruction. Its origin is from being surrounded by the enemy, for when he is surrounded by them, he has been possessed and dominated by them. Then it was used in every destruction. From it is His saying, 'Except that you are encompassed by you.' And similar to it is their saying: 'He came upon him,' meaning he destroyed him, as in 'the enemy came upon them' when he came to them in dominance over them. The turning of the palms is a metaphor for regret and sorrow, because the one who regrets turns his palms back and forth, as some have referred to it in terms of the hand and falling into the palm. And because it is in the meaning of regret, it was transitive with 'on,' as if it were said: 'So he became regretful for what he spent in it,' meaning he spent on its construction while it was empty on its foundations, meaning that its trellised vines had their supports fallen to the ground, and the vines fell upon them. It was said: Allah sent a fire upon it and consumed it. 'Oh, I wish I had remembered the admonition of my brother,' for he knew that he had come from the direction of his polytheism and tyranny. He wished he had not been a polytheist so that Allah would not destroy his garden. It is permissible that this is a repentance from polytheism, and regret for what was from him, and an entry into faith. And it was read: 'And it was not' with the letter 'ya' and 'ta,' and the meaning of 'they support him' was taken without the wording, as in His saying: 'A group fighting in the way of Allah and another disbelieving group seeing them.' If you say: What is the meaning of His saying 'they support him besides Allah'? I say: Its meaning is that they are able to support him besides Allah, meaning He alone is capable of supporting him; no one else can support him, except that He did not support him due to a hindrance, which is His decree that he be forsaken. And he was not victorious, nor was he able by his strength to prevent Allah's vengeance.
