Commentary
And strike for them a parable of two men. This is a parable of the state of the disbelievers and the believers, in the case of two men who were brothers in the Children of Israel: one of them was a disbeliever named Qatros, and the other was a believer named Yahudha. It is said:
They are the ones mentioned in Surah As-Saffat in the saying, "A speaker among them said, 'Indeed, I had a companion.'" They inherited from their father eight thousand dinars, and they divided it. The disbeliever bought land for a thousand, and the believer said: "O Allah, my brother bought land for a thousand dinars, and I buy from You land in Paradise for a thousand," and he gave charity with it. Then his brother built a house for a thousand, and he said: "O Allah, I buy from You a house in Paradise for a thousand," and he gave charity with it. Then his brother married a woman for a thousand, and he said: "O Allah, I made a thousand a dowry for the houris." Then his brother bought servants and goods for a thousand, and he said: "O Allah, I bought from You the eternal youths for a thousand," and he gave charity with it. Then he faced a need, so he sat by the road of his brother, and when he passed by with his entourage, he approached him, but he drove him away and reproached him for giving charity with his money. It is said:
They are a parable of two brothers from Banu Makhzum: the believer is Abu Salamah Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aswad, who was the husband of Umm Salamah before the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. And the disbeliever is Al-Aswad ibn Abd al-Aswad.
He had two gardens of vines, two orchards of grapes, and We surrounded them with date palms, making the palms encircle the two gardens. This is what the farmers prefer in their vineyards: to make them surrounded by fruitful trees. It is said: They surrounded it, if they encompassed it: and they surrounded it with them. That is, they made them surrounding it, and it is transitive to one object. "And We made between them crops," We made it a land that gathers provisions and fruits.
And the description of the cultivation is that it is continuous and intertwined, with nothing in between that cuts it off and separates them, with a beautiful shape and elegant arrangement, and We described them with the fullness of fruits and the completeness of eating without deficiency, then with what is the origin of goodness and its substance from the matter of drinking, so We made it the best thing to be watered with, which is the flow of the river running in it.
And eating: the fruit. And it was read with the kaf being pronounced and "And you did not wrong" meaning you did not decrease. And "And it gave" was carried on the wording, because both of their words are the wording of a singular. If it were said: "And they gave" on the meaning, it would be permissible. And it was read: "And We burst forth," in a lighter form. And Abdullah read: "Every one of the two gardens gave its fruit," returning the pronoun to every one.
And he had fruit, meaning types of wealth, from the fruit of his wealth. If it increased. And from Mujahid: gold and silver, meaning: he had wealth abundant in the two described gardens, from gold and silver and others, and he was wealthy in every aspect, capable of cultivating the land as he wished.
And he had a strong entourage, meaning supporters and followers. It is said: male children, because they accompany him unlike females. He converses with him: he engages him in speech, from "Hara" meaning to return, and I asked him, so I did not find a word to return.
