Commentary
Tatazaawaru means to sway. Its origin is: tatazaawar, which has been softened by merging the تاء into the زاي or omitting it. It has been recited in both ways. It has also been recited as tazawwar. And tazawaar is in the form of tahmurr and tahmaar, all of which come from الزور, which means inclination. From it is زاره if he inclined towards him. And الزور is the inclination away from truth to the right side. Its reality is that the direction called the right cuts them off, it does not bring them closer, meaning it is akin to severance and disconnection. Dhul-Rumma said: "To a caravan that cuts across the heights... to the north, and to their right are the knights." The phrase 'to a caravan that cuts across the heights' refers to the upper parts of a prominent mountain. It is narrated as 'ajwaz, the plural of جوز, meaning the passage and the way, meaning it separates us from them. And north refers to the direction of the north, and الفوارس is the name of a place, and it is made plural from فارس, as it is said: the encounter distances him.
And they are in a spacious area of it, meaning they are in a vastness of the cave. The meaning is that they are in the shade of their entire day; the sun does not reach them at its rising or setting, even though they are in an open and exposed place that would be susceptible to the sun's rays were it not that Allah shields them from it. It is said: in a spaciousness of their cave, they receive the spirit of the air and the coolness of the breeze, and they do not perceive the distress of the cave. That is from the signs of Allah, meaning what Allah has done for them - the inclination of the sun and its cutting at rising and setting - is a sign of His signs, meaning that what is in that direction is affected by the sun, but they are not affected, as a special honor for them. It is said: the cave's entrance faces north towards the constellation of the Little Dipper, so they are in a place that is never touched by the sun. The meaning of that being from the signs of Allah is that their state and their story are from the signs of Allah. Whomever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided. This is a praise of them for having struggled for Allah and submitted their faces to Him, so He was gentle with them and aided them, and guided them to attain that lofty honor and the distinction of the great sign. And that whoever follows the path of the rightly guided will attain success and be guided to happiness, and whoever is exposed to failure will find no one to support him or guide him after Allah's abandonment.
