Commentary

Al-Midad: It is the name of what is used to fill the inkpot and what is used to fuel the lamp with oil. It is said: The sky is the midad of the earth. The meaning is: If the words of Allah's knowledge and wisdom were to be written, and the sea were to be the midad for them, the sea would run out before the words would run out. And if we brought something like the sea as midad, it would also run out.

And the words are not exhausted. And 'midad' is a distinguishing term, like saying: I have a man like him. And 'madd' is like 'midad', which is what is used to extend. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: with something like it as midad. And Al-A'raj read: 'maddan', with a kasra on the meem, as a plural of 'muddah', which is what the writer uses to write with. And it was read: 'yanfadu' with a ya. And it is said that Hiyy ibn Akhtab said:

In your book, 'And whoever is given wisdom has certainly been given much good,' then you read, 'And what you have been given of knowledge is but a little.' So it was revealed, meaning: That is much good, but it is a drop from the sea of Allah's words.
