103Say, “Shall We tell you about the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds? 104Those are the ones whose effort in the worldly life has gone in vain, while they think they are doing well. 105Those are the ones who rejected the signs of their Lord and (the concept of) meeting with Him, so their deeds have gone to waste, and We shall assign to them no weight at all. 106That is their punishment, the Jahannam , for they disbelieved and made My signs and My messengers a mockery.

Commentary

Their efforts have gone astray and become null, and they are the monks. From Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, as in his saying: 'Laboring and striving.' And from Mujahid: 'The People of the Book.' And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: that Ibn al-Kawwa asked him about them. He said: 'Among them are the people of Harura.' And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: 'A people will come with deeds on the Day of Resurrection that are to them as great as the mountains of Tihamah. When weighed, they will not weigh anything. So we will not establish for them on the Day of Resurrection any weight, and we will disdain them, and they will have no weight or measure with us.' It is said: 'No scale will be established for them, because the scale is only placed for the people of good deeds and bad deeds among the monotheists.' And it was read: 'So He does not establish,' with the pronoun 'He.' If you say: 'In which position are those whose efforts have gone astray?' I say: 'The most appropriate is that it be in the nominative case, as in: 'They are those whose efforts have gone astray,' because it is an answer to the question. It is also permissible for it to be in the accusative case as a form of blame, or in the genitive case as an appositive, with Jahannam being an explanatory apposition to the saying: 'Their recompense.'
